FFLA Releases US Postage Stamp featuring NC Lookout fe
The national Forest Fire Lookout Association (FFLA) has just released a new US postage stamp, its second lookout tower stamp. This stamp features Duckett Top Lookout, a North Carolina fire tower tucked away in Madison County. Featured in Hiking North Carolina’s Lookout Towers, Duckett Top is a CCC built 10 ft. stone former live-in lookout atop Rich Knob just south of Hot Springs, NC at the crest of Spring Mountain. Visitors will enjoy not only the quaint lookout tower and its unspoiled views of Madison County, the Newfound Mountains, and a distant downtown Asheville, but also a unique organic mountain farm, Briar Rose Farm, at the base of the mountain and trailhead. Almost 40% of the profits from the sale of this postage stamp are turned over the FFLA to be used for lookout tower restorations. Click the postage stamp above or here to purchase postage featuring this picturesque NC lookout tower. |

Lookout Tower Challenge Patch |
The Lookout Tower Challenge is a program co-sponsored by the NC chapter of FFLA and the Carolina Mountain Club. It challenges hikers to reach 24 of western North Carolina’s lookout towers by trail. Completers are given formal recognition at the CMC’s annual banquet, a certificate of completion, and an embroidered hiking patch, as seen above. The patch was designed by New York FFLA director Bill Starr and production is complete. The patch measures 3.5” in diameter.
